Part of the extensive Nowill family of Sheffield cutlers, William and John Nowill were sons of Thomas Nowill III. They were business partners and each registered their silver marks (W.N) and (J.N) on the same day, 27 June 1825 just prior to their father Thomas’s retirement, after which they took over the family business.

Description

This John Nowill pocket fruit knife measures 3 inches in the closed position. Assayed at the Sheffield Assay Office with five hallmarks: the Sheffield crown, lion passant, and George IV duty mark, date letter ‘d’ and the maker’s mark “JN”. The knife is made with brass liners, rounded mother-of-pearl scales, silvered bolsters and a stepped silver back bar sleeve. The knife is in excellent condition.
