Description
Between 1860 and 1895 silver dog combs were fashionable among the middle and upper classes. They were constructed like a folding pen knife with a comb instead of a blade.
This example was made by John and Joseph Storr, highly respected 19th century silversmiths. The comb measures 3 1/4 inches in the closed position and has a ‘bow-tie’ shaped body. It is made with brass liners, iridescent mother-of-pearl scales and applied silver cartouche engraved with the original owner’s name “Beatrice” and a finely tooled silver back bar sleeve.
The comb is hallmarked but the only easily readable marks are those of the maker (J & JS).
This rare and highly collectable item of Victorian novelty silver is in excellent condition.
